CVC’s Desai Wins National Faculty Award

Dr. DesaiPlease join us in congratulating Dr. Suryakant Desai, Professor of Accounting at Cedar Valley College, for winning the national William H. Meardy Faculty Member Award presented October 16 at the 2015 Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership Congress in San Diego.

This is the first time a faculty member from the Dallas County Community College District has won the award, and indeed the first time a faculty member from the state of Texas has ever won the award, dating back to 1982. He joins these previous national ACCT winners who have represented DCCCD: Bill J. Priest (1980) and J. William Wenrich (1999), Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Officer Award; Pattie Powell (1984) and Kitty Boyle (2009), M. Dale Ensign Trustee Award; and Dallas County Community College District (2008), Charles Kennedy Equity Award.

“We are very proud of Dr. Desai for receiving this well-deserved recognition, which is also a reflection of the high standards we set for faculty in our College and across the District,” said Dr. Jennifer Wimbish, CVC President.

Dr. Desai added, “I thank the ACCT for the special effort they make in recognizing faculty, and I am humbled and honored to receive this award. Some 43 years ago, I came to this nation from India in search of a dream. Today, I feel like I have achieved that dream.”

Dr. Desai is Cedar Valley’s Accounting program coordinator and teaches Personal Finance and Introduction to Business courses. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Bombay, India; master’s degrees in professional accounting and in business administration from the University of Texas-Arlington; and a doctorate in secondary and higher education from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) and a certified financial planner (CFP).

Full-time faculty since 1984, he taught as adjunct faculty in the district for two years and for six years prior to that in private colleges. Over the years he has taught most of the courses in the college’s accounting program.

Dr. Desai has previously received Cedar Valley College’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 1988, and is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Texas Society of CPAs. He has taught courses in the traditional classroom and in open entry/open exit and online modes.
